What Makes an AN Fitting Seal

An AN fitting seals on a 37-degree flare. The flared end of the tube presses into a matching cone inside the fitting, metal on metal. That contact does all the sealing, so the joint holds without tape or thread sealant on it. 

The flare does more than seal. It lets these connections shrug off vibration and hold high pressure, and it lets them come apart and go back together. Cut the hose, rebuild the end, run it again. A damaged flare or chewed threads are the only thing that stops a reuse.

How AN Sizing Works

Sizing is quick to read. The dash number is the tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch. A -6 fits a 3/8 inch line. A -8 fits 1/2 inch. A -10 fits 5/8 inch. Match the dash to your line and the parts thread up across brands.

AN Hoses and Hose Ends

AN hoses come in a few builds. Each hose needs its own type of end. The right pairing keeps the whole system dry.

Braided rubber hose, wrapped in steel or nylon, covers most fuel and oil runs. PTFE-lined hose stands up to ethanol blends and the heat that hardens rubber over time. The ends aren’t interchangeable. A PTFE hose end bites the liner, a rubber hose end grips the rubber.
