If it’s time for maintenance on your excavator, or if you need replacement excavator parts to fix a problem, you need to understand the types of excavator on your job site and the parts of an excavator that you need for each. Learn more about excavator types and parts in the paragraphs below.

The Different Types of Excavators

There are several types of excavators you may use on your jobsite, each with a different purpose. Whether you’re looking for excavator used parts, mini excavator parts, or other excavator parts, understanding the purpose of each machine can help you figure out the parts you need.

  • Crawler excavators. Crawlers run on tracks rather than wheels and feature a long arm and bucket. This style of excavator is slower than some others but is excellent for uneven ground.
  • Wheeled excavators. Wheeled excavators have a similar design to crawlers but use wheels rather than tracks. These have better speed but aren’t suitable for uneven ground.
  • Suction excavators. Also called vacuum excavators, these machines use suction hoses to remove earth from underground with precision.
  • Skid steer excavators. These small excavators often feature four synchronized wheels and lift arms that manipulate the bucket to push material away from the driver.
  • Dragline excavators. Dragline excavators use a hoist and bucket system, often for canal dredging and underwater excavation.
  • Long-reach excavators. Similar to crawler excavators, these machines have extended arm and boom sections to better reach faraway areas. Not suitable for tight spaces.
  • Mini excavators. These small, tracked excavators are perfect for narrow job sites that require more maneuverability.

Excavator Parts Explained

In the excavator parts diagram above, you can see the different parts of an excavator that sometimes need replacement. Excavator hydraulic parts suppliers carry many suitable replacement parts for these machines, including:

  • Bucket teeth replacements
  • Bucket teeth adapters
  • Grader blades
  • End bits
  • Side bits
  • Cutting edges
  • Teeth pins, locks, and retainers
  • Tracks and track pads
  • Track chains
  • Track roller replacements
  • Ripper teeth replacements
  • Sprocket replacements

Some parts in the assembly manage the motion of the machine, such as the sprockets, tracks, rollers, and track pads. Other parts in the cab maintain control of the machine and power its functions, like the driver controls, hydraulic fluid tanks, engine, fuel tank, and other parts.

The arm and boom systems help the machine do work. These systems sometimes need replacement of the hydraulic cylinders, the bucket and bucket teeth, or other attachments like cutting edges, augers, or tree shears.
